Performed by Tanya Ury

Fury is a delegated performance video as part of Tanja Ostojic´s project Misplaced Women?, about the loss of the Ury/Unger family archive with the collapse of the Historical Archives in Cologne, on 3rd March 2009, and, filmed on 3rd October 2009, German Re-unification Day, on the twentieth anniversary of re-unification.

With Fury Tanya Ury takes on the role of one of the Three Furies, also known as the Erinnyes, or Eumenides, the so-called Avenging Goddesses of the Antique, who avenged heavy crimes. She carries a suitcase full of scripts and articles written by her grandfather, Alfred H. Unger, which had mistakenly been delivered to her home address and not the City Archives ten years ago, and which she kept. At the “hole”, the location where the Cologne City Archives once stood, she reads one of these articles about Cologne, from 1948.

On Vienna airport I was about to deliver my art work and some accompanying materials for Les femmes parlent exhibition at Gandy Gallery Bratislava, to the driver from Goethe Institute Bratislava, who kindly took the following photos.

I was placing down large plastic bag with After Courbet, L´origin du monde, 46 X 55 cm photo on aluminium base. Then was unpacking my large suitcase to find long carton box with posters, as well as small parcel with books. After that I went to Vienna for Gender Check exhibition setting in MUMOK, while the driver with my three small parcels went to Bratislava…

Misplaced Women? is a delegated performance in which women volunteers carry packed suitcases in the public spaces repeatedly pausing to pack and unpack as they move about the city.
In this project, Tanja Ostojic enacts an everyday life activity that signifies a displacement as common to transients, migrants, and disaster refugees, as it is to the itinerant artist traveling the world to earn her living. Ostojic’s street performance continues themes of migration, desired mobility, and relations of power and vulnerability in regards to the mobile female body, found in much of her previous work.

On the way from Pittsburgh to Zagreb, my luggage was misplaced for several days. I bought some PSi conference t shirts and a few other cheap things to wear in the complex of underground shops at the train station. I changed clothes, combed my hair and repacked the old and new items in the backpack I had carried on board the plane. This was performed behind the train station: a place that seemed to host an entirely different demographic of people and businesses than the “front” of the station did. It gave me strange recollections of a very itinerant period in my childhood when a sturdy cardboard box for furniture or a bit of privacy for grooming were cherished commodities.
At the same time, I was fully aware of the Kunas in my pocket and the cozy hotel room I was sharing a few blocks away.
